NY Tourist
The NY Tourist is an East Coast homage to The L.A. Tourist Race.
The NY Tourist is an adventurous, self-supported bike event that starts on July 12th at Two Seas Cyclery in Brooklyn, NY at 8:00 AM SHARP. From there, you’ll head out into the greater New York area on a mission to find “checkpoints” at specific GPS coordinates.
The Challenge
Your goal is to navigate yourself to every checkpoint using your preferred route. Along the way, expect the full New York experience: bustling city traffic, trails that turn into riverbeds, distracted iPhone-scrolling jaywalkers, luxury gravel roads, downed trees, noise-cancelling, over-the-ear headphone-wearing dog walkers, rewarding singletrack, and — hopefully — roads and trails on the East Coast you’ve never ridden before.
This is a fully self-supported and self-navigated event. A bike computer with GPS routing is highly recommended for success.
How It Works
Each checkpoint corresponds to a GPS location. Once you arrive, locate the checkpoint book and tear out the page that matches your event entry plate number.
The first rider to return to WeisMFG with all the correct pages wins. Disqualification is automatic if you:
Miss a checkpoint
Collect the wrong page
Lose any pages
Optional Enduro-Style Timed Segments
Take your ride to the next level with the optional enduro-style timed segments. These specially selected sections are designed to add excitement and challenge to your journey, giving you the chance to win a chance at a separate podium.
To qualify, simply upload your full ride to Strava. The fastest time on each segment for the day wins.
Ready to test your navigation, bike-handling, and adventure spirit? The NY Tourist awaits.
run what you brung
Is it road? Is it gravel? Some might say they’d be better off with suspension.
The NY Tourist Race starts in the busy streets of NYC where you’ll collect plenty of road miles, but you’ll often find yourself riding off-road navigating obstacles and obstructions.
Honestly any type of human-powered bike is allowed and they’ll each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Just show up and participate with whatever you've got.
It’s highly encouraged to register early.
There will be an email the night before the event sharing the GPS coordinates to the “checkpoints”. Also included are videos showing exactly where to find the book at each “checkpoint”.

Questions?
-
No, GPS is not required. However, it will make navigation significantly easier and more enjoyable.
We highly recommend using a GPS system that works offline. There are times where cell service is very limited or nonexistent.
Recommended Offline Options:
Google Maps: Supports offline map downloads. Simply download the relevant map area in advance. You can also drop pins for each checkpoint or coordinate.
Strava and Ride with GPS: Their paid versions allow you to download routes and maps for full offline navigation.
Downloading your maps or routes beforehand is essential—don’t rely on real-time data during the event.

Yes, but it’s not advised. Make sure you come early to pay, sign the waiver, and get your event number.

This is an adventure, there’s no “perfect” bike. The best choice depends on the route you create. You get to decide how much pavement versus dirt/gravel you want to tackle.
In the end, the most important thing is reaching the designated checkpoints — pick the bike that lets you do that comfortably and efficiently.
But keep in mind there are additional podiums/ prizes for fastest times in the “enduro“ segments.
